Isla Middleton's Story
Isla Middleton is a British printmaker who graduated from Falmouth University in 2016 where she studied textile design, specialising in print. Since graduating, Isla has settled in Devon and has focused on developing her artistic style and printmaking techniques to become a truly exceptional and unique botanical lino printer.
Printmaking Inspiration
Isla sources inspiration for her designs from plant forms, flowers and natural colours from her immediate surroundings in Dartmoor, Devon; focusing on shape, form and texture. Isla's distinctive botanical and nature inspired designs embody the vitality and expressiveness of plant forms. Her work aims to deepen the relationship we have with the natural world by enhancing our attention to plants and the passing seasons.
Lino Printing Process
Every product produced by Isla first begins as a sketch. Sketching her botanical designs enables Isla to finesse the artwork before she then intricately hand carves the design into a block of lino. Once the carving process has been finished Isla rolls ink onto the surface of the lino block and then layers paper or fabric on top before applying pressure to produce a print. Like woodcut and wood engraving, lino printing is a relief printing process.
Eco-Friendly Printing & Papers
All of Isla Middleton's products are printed using vegetable based, vegan inks on to eco-friendly papers that are either 100% recycled or bleach free. The materials chosen by Isla are carefully considered to ensure they are sustainable and have as little environmental footprint as possible.
