The Creamore Mill Story
Established in 1981 by John Buckland, Creamore Mill is a family owned woodturning workshop located in rural Shropshire, England. Now led by John's sons, Sam and Oliver, the business has expanded from a ten square foot former wash house where many of their designs were developed with a handful of tools and a single wood lathe; to moving to Creamore Mill which was formerly a historic corn and wood mill that has been lovingly restored and renovated by the family.
Product Design Ethos
All of Creamore Mill's products are designed by their team in Shropshire. They consider the merits of any products design to be in the function, practicality and longevity of the product. It is common for these attributes alone to form the aesthetics of a Creamore Mill product. Inspiration is drawn from traditional tools and implements, for it is the tried and tested routes that often give up the least resistance to purpose and success.
Natural Material Choices
All of the seasoned or kilned timber that Creamore Mill use in their products production is sourced from UK sawmills. The most common species of timber that are used are Oak, Beech and Redwood. Creamore Mill is careful to select only species of timber that are widely available from sustainable sources, originating in well managed forests across Scandinavia, North America and Europe. Creamore Mill conforms to EUTR (EU timber regulations) and their suppliers are FSC and PEFC accredited.
Production Process
Creamore Mill products are made from start to finish in their own workshop. The wood turning process is an efficient method of transforming a rough block of wood to it’s final form in one process. In some cases, the turning process is the final operation, though often they continue to hand-finish, sand or tumble components. Whichever method is used, it has to be in sympathy with the wood to really promote its natural finish. Having all these processes under one roof at their Shropshire mill allows Creamore Mill to uphold excellent quality and celebrate the beauty of the natural wood.
